The Extramural Clinical Research Loan Repayment Program are Clinical Research government loans for individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds. The National Center on Minority Health and Health Disparities commits one million dollars every year to fund these educational loans. The purpose of the Extramural Clinical Research Loan Repayment Program is to let clinical research centers hire and retain qualified health professionals from disadvantaged backgrounds. The term “individual form disadvantaged background” refers to an individual coming from a low-income group as defined by the United States Bureau of the Census. The individual must be from a disadvantaged background and this is one of the many eligibility criteria to get such government loans. The applicant is also required to have a Ph.D., M.D., D.O., D.D.S., D.M.D., D.P.M., Pharm.D, Psy.D., D.C., N.D., or equivalent doctoral degree from a certified institution and must be involved in clinical research in the context described above. The application period for a clinical research loan availed of under the Extramural Clinical Research Loan Repayment Program is from September 1st to November 15th of every year. The loan is intended to be used for repayment of the educational loans and recipients must give a written commitment that they will engage in clinical research for a period of at least two years. After the end of the minimum two-year period, the Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services or his representative may offer extensions provided certain qualifying criteria be satisfied.
